About the Work
A flatbed scanner is a camera with no shutter and no mercy. It reads the body one line of light at a time, so anything that moves gets stretched, split, or erased. I used that slowness on purpose: pressing my face, my hands, my hair, and my medical devices against the glass and letting the machine misunderstand them.
This series is where Monitored Cyborg came from, made during the same season of new diagnoses. The scanner turned out to be the right instrument for that moment: a machine that examines you up close, brightly, and entirely on its own terms.
The full series runs more than forty frames. These are the ones I keep coming back to.
Beyond the Body
The scanner is just as strange with objects as it is with bodies. The bees, rainbows, scary, and sparkle scans are mine: iridescent materials dragged through the light turn into weather (look closely at the rainbows and you will find the fish). Team things was made together with my Photography II classmates in one long scanner session, everyone feeding the machine whatever was in reach.
