Project Statement
For this project, light as a subject, I looked at lights inside various businesses and how they are intentionally used to produce a given atmosphere.
The first set of photos is inspired by the bright flashy commercialized colors and lights in the downtown shops. In my opinion, the two images on the top and bottom go to support the middle image. The top image is focusing on the light's interaction with metallic streamers. The light from inside the store reflects on the metal streamers on the left side while the soft natural light shines in on the right. The bottom image is a close-up of another metallic surface, this one being colored and has a rainbow reflection. The UV lights inside the building created glare on multiple parts of the flowers while also being the source of the rainbow. Finally, the middle photo features a frame within a frame and yet again that metallic color. This image on the left is lit up by a spotlight within the store. On the right side it is the natural light coming from outside creating that soft shadow.
The second set of images was inspired by softer light indoors in a means to create a natural and cozy atmosphere. Each photo in this set features a synthetic version of something naturally occurring including the berries, the snowflake, and the leaves. I found this really interesting because despite the fact we are inside the business's goal was to replicate soft natural light and atmosphere. In contrast to the first set of images, the colors of this set are a lot more neutral albeit gold is still present, which is featured as the dog in this set. In the top image, the snowflakes cast a shadow onto the wall while also having a hard shadow on itself. The line in the background almost matches up with the centerline of the snowflake. The bottom photo is of a hidden candle illuminating the synthetic vines against the wall while the overhead lights illuminate the top of the leaves. The middle photo features the gold dog lamp not only illuminating itself but the surrounding area. This corner was particularly dark compared to the rest of the environment except for the lamp.
